CULTURAL DIVERSITY:
IT'S URGENT, IT'S IMPORTANT
AND
IT'S IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE
Students: Grace Breton and Maia Nicolosi
With such an urgent and important matter at hand, we chose to spread awareness about indigenous exclusion from society, along with the ubiquitous importance of their languages by introducing these issues into Hudson High School’s freshman curriculum.
Our project centered around creating an interactive lesson plan for our school’s 9th grade class, emphasizing the struggles that indigenous people currently experience in the United States, a subject that perfectly fit into these students’ curriculum at the time, being centered around the historical plights of Native Americans. By bringing to center stage the current social and cultural issues that Native Americans continue to encounter, we were able to impress a call for action onto the students.
From here, we discussed the hope that Native Americans’ languages, though rapidly disappearing, may hold the key to easing some of the struggles that they and others may face, with students completing activities throughout the lesson as to further engage them in the matter.
All of this brought awareness to the younger generations, who, while learning about the historical suffering of Native Americans may not have realized the importance of comprehending their struggles today.
