CLIMATE CHANGE

THE PROJECT

Students: Mohini Ghoshroy & Margot Joyce

One major way we can impact climate change is through education.  For this reason we have decided to educate the student body about the impacts of climate change and what students can do on a daily basis that will help medicate the problem. The team realized that one major area of improvement for the school would be the use of recycling bins during school lunches. Although the school places large emphasis on classroom recycling the recycling occurring during lunches falls short. After diagnosing the problem (students either don’t know about or can’t find the recycle bins), the team worked to redesign the bins with flashy signage and created an infomercial petitioning students to use them. This infomercial will be shown during a live morning announcement feed to the entire student population.

To further educate students as to why recycling is so important, a second more content-based science video will be made. This video will feature the impacts of climate change, how climate change affects ecosystems and the economy and what each person can do to minimize climate change impact. This video will be shown in all science classes.

Following the implementation of both videos, the team will see if the recycling efforts in the school has increased. In order to establish whether or not the project had an impact, baseline data about current recycling efforts was obtained.

One major way to combat climate change is through education. It was identified that Hudson High School could improve their recycling efforts during lunches. Recycling bins were given updated signs and the recycling trick shot commerical was launched! It was found that recycling was increased by 100% following the commercial.

After getting students to recycle more at lunch for the "fun" of it, a follow-up video was shown to educate students about climate change and how small acts (like recycling at lunch) can have big impacts over time.
