WHAT KIND OF OCEANS DO WE WANT FOR THE FUTURE?

THE PROJECT - A WAVE OF CHANGE

Students: Rachel Matisko and Taylor Simonenko

As passionate students in our secluded town of Hudson, we are taking this opportunity to spread our passion with our community and promote change. Our project consists of two main objectives: to raise awareness for ocean pollution and to make change in our community. A large part of our project consists of creating a lesson to teach at each elementary school in our district. By using an interactive and informative presentation, we not only hope to raise awareness about the dangers of ocean pollution, but also encourage eco-friendly habits within the younger generation. One activity we have asked them to partake in is the creation of a mural that will be part of our art exhibit. Each school will contribute to a collection of murals, allowing our art piece to effectively incorporate community outreach. The second part of our project involves activism, as we strive to reduce waste production within our school systems. We are currently working with community leaders to try and reduce the amount of plastic waste that the school systems produce by either eliminating plastic straws altogether or switching to paper. The goal of this is to encourage the younger generation to be more aware as well as be a stepping stool for change and activism within our community. We will be preparing video clips, as well as pictures and artifacts to present to the schools and at the conference.
